Thank you for the color theory and tools! I’m about to create my first website and really want to use a black background with pastel colored, not white, fonts. I prefer this schemata because it’s way easier on my eyes with the reduced glare. I’ve been using the net for almost 20 years and see very few sites with dark backgrounds. Some white font on black is fine, but pages of it is too much contrast for me too. I’ve noticed a trend of light grey font on white backgrounds and when I see a site with that scheme, I bounce because it’s too straining to read. I’d love comments on the following 2 questions:
Does using a dark background really turn off the majority of potential subscribers?
I’ve heard that most webpages are white because at first they were emulating books…why is the majority of pages white?

This means you’ll want to think carefully about the effect you want your site to have on visitors. Do you want them to feel calm and relaxed? You may want to pick a shade of blue as your primary color. If you want to attract a young audience and get them excited, on the other hand, red may be a better choice. Once you have a primary color in mind for your website, you can move on to the next task.

Don’t drive yourself bonkers trying to choose whether your blog should be accented with teal or lilac, but do keep in mind how your target audience may perceive those choices. For instance, men tend to gravitate toward strong, bright colors, while women typically prefer softer tones. Blues and greens are widely accepted and rather safe choices, while you may want to steer clear of oranges and browns. Younger folks tend to prefer brighter colors, but people’s preferred palettes tend to become more muted with age.

Sadly it won’t work through the Theme Options panel. You need to add it to your functions.php file and use the enqueue script there. I would suggest using a child theme if you aren’t already. It would be devastating to go through all of the work to get this right, only to have it erased on the next update for your theme. There are tons of tutorials on how to do this. I would offer to help if I had the time, unfortunately, I don’t. Once you know how to do it, it only takes about 20 to 30 minutes to code in a full Jquery script to customize what you’re working on. You may also need to deregister WP’s Jquery. If you notice any errors appearing in the Chrome Developer Tools, that might be a place to start.
Good luck!
