Have you ever worked with a client where you are trying to customize the WordPress back-end experience for them? Maybe you added a custom dashboard widget, removed menu items, or even created custom write panels. Well Greg Kerstin (@graphicagenda) was working on a project where he wanted to modify the howdy text in the WordPress admin bar. Normally it says Howdy, Username. He was kind enough to submit a snippet to us in which he shows how to change the howdy text and replace it with Welcome.

Every WordPress user should be familiar with the “Howdy” message that appears in the Admin Bar when they are logged in. The problem with “Howdy” is that it’s an informal word and sounds very unprofessional. Perhaps for some reason your client is given access to your WordPress Dashboard. If that’s the case, you might want to change it into a more proper greeting like “Welcome” for example.

WordPress (Sonny) version 3.3 was just released last night. Half asleep, I downloaded the new version, set up my database, and installed it. Fancy new welcome, I like it. Then, I went and configured my settings just the way I like it. Fix the tagline, set the permalinks (Look, %postname%, awesome, awesome to the max), set the date and time format, etc. etc. Then I disabled the admin-bar. Clicked “Update Profile”. Great! Hey, wait a minute. The admin-bar is still there!? What the [Insert Expletive]!

Here is a piece of WordPress code which allows you to change/remove “Howdy Text” in admin bar. For doing this you need to copy and paste the following piece of code to your functions.php
